Very few writers would claim that writing a novel is easy. It is a very different process from writing a poem or a short story. A novel requires sustained effort and often many drafts. Below, some very experienced authors give advice for how to write a novel.
Authors rarely agree with each other. However all the authors quoted below seem to agree on this one essential thing all writers need in order to succeed. The answer may not be surprising. But that does not make it any less true.

Stephen King is not my favorite writer. The only piece of fiction I have read by him, The Stand, gave me nightmares. However I read On Writing, as a new writer and have since returned to it many times. His advice is helpful, apt, and insightful. Here are 10 of my favorite Stephen King quotes.
