12 Literary Magazines Accepting Artwork

These magazines accept artwork of various kinds; cover art, art portfolios, graphic narrative, or photographs. Many of these magazines pay. They are a mix of literary and genre outlets. They also accept other genres, like fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Most, but not all, of them are open for art submissions now. They are listed in no particular order.
 
Shenandoah
This literary magazine pays for comics (black and white or color), as much as their budget allows. These should be submitted as PDFs. They’re closed for fiction, nonfiction and poetry currently, and are open for comics. Details here and here.

Nashville Review
Literary comics may be submitted year-round; “We welcome anything from one-page comics to excerpts from graphic novels. Please note that we do not publish single-frame cartoons in the style of The New Yorker.”Submit here. They also feature one or two featured artists per issue. Featured artists are paid $100; see their general guidelines here (scroll down) for details/specifics on sending your work for consideration to this section. You can see their previously published comics here and featured art here. Poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and translations, which pay $25-100, will reopen in August.

Rattle
This print and online magazine accepts poetry in various categories; see their general guidelines here. They also accept artwork – “submit up to six JPGs. Most often we only use art for our covers, which are full-bleed, 9″ x 6″.  In order to publish a cover we will need a file with at least 300 ppi—but please submit smaller screen-res files (no larger than 1 MB each or so) for now.” And, “Artwork should somehow relate to the theme. We also prefer to have covers with vibrant colors, rather than black and white.” They’re open for Food and Young Poets themes for artwork (deadline 15 April for both), as well as for unthemed art currently. You can see their cover art for previous issues here. They pay $100-200 for poems, and pay $200 and a box of contributor copies for artwork. The Headlight Review
This magazine is affiliated with Kennesaw State University. They accept fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art. For art, “We accept up to 6 images of photography, comics, digital artwork, of scanned images of traditional artwork such as paintings, drawings, or sketches. Submissions must have a minimum of 300 dpi resolution, regardless of format. Three-dimensional artwork requires a minimum of two photos taken from different angles, taken in front of a neutral background (black, white, or gray preferred). Artwork must include the name of the artist, the title, the medium, the size of the work, and the year created to be considered.” You can see the art they’ve published previously here. The New Yorker
This prestigious magazine accepts unsolicited submissions of cartoons. “Cartoons are reviewed on a rolling basis. Send up to ten cartoons per submission… we do not consider ideas for cartoons; only fully drawn cartoons. We also do not consider illustrations, caricatures, or covers.” And, “Please submit your work as multiple JPG, or PNG files.”  Details here. They also accept fiction and poetry, as well as submissions for their Shouts & Murmurs and Daily Shouts sections; details here.  

Posit
They publish three online issues a year. “Posit is interested in finely crafted, innovative literary and visual art.” They’re open now for visual art (they want an artist’s statement, as well as “12-18 images of your art — high resolution jpegs)”, video and animation, prose, and poetry. Khoreo
“We invite artists who identify as part of the immigrant and diaspora community to submit. Artists should have a unique art style and a portfolio showing full illustrations of characters inhabiting their environments.
We welcome art that explores speculative elements in new, thoughtful, and personal ways, especially if it relates to the immigrant or diaspora experience.” They commission one piece of 8.5×11 cover art per issue. Cover art can be in monochrome or color. They pay $500 for custom cover art and $100 for cover art drawn from an artist’s existing portfolio. They’ll open for speculative fiction from immigrants and diaspora community, and also for speculative fiction translations, in March; they pay $0.10/word for fiction and translations. Illustrated Worlds Magazine
Illustrated Worlds is a quarterly online and print magazine specializing in fantasy, dark fantasy and horror.They’re open for artwork; “Looking for moody, mysterious, fantastical art in the genres of horror, dark fantasy and fantasy. Needs are for one piece of art for a cover printed in color, but plenty of black and white art is needed for the inside. Please send good quality JPEG images”. You can see their previous cover art here. “Cover art will receive one copy of the magazine and $50. Inside art will receive one copy of the printed magazine and $10 – $20 depending on the size of the printed version.” The magazine pays $0.01/word for fiction and $10 for poems; both are currently closed. Electric Lit
They accept fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, as well as graphic narrative for The Commuter Section. “For Graphic Narrative, we are interested in both traditional and non-traditional forms of visual storytelling. Submit up to 3 pieces of narrative illustration, comics, mixed media narrative, or genre-negative oddments. For comics, each piece should contain a minimum of 3 panels. The total page count of your submission should not exceed 20 pages.” Electric Lit pays $100 for submissions to The Commuter section and essays, and they pay $300 for stories submitted to the Recommended Reading series. The Scop
This literary and fine arts magazine is affiliated with King’s College. They’re accepting submissions of art (submit up to 5 photographs or art pieces), as well as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and screenplays. They’ll close to submissions on 8 March 2025, or when their submission quota is reached, whichever is earlier. Details here, here, and here.

Factor Four Magazine
“We are looking for artwork that has strong Science Fiction, Fantasy, Supernatural, or Superhero themes.” See their issues here for previously published cover art. They pay $200 for cover art. They also want stories with these elements, and pay $0.11/word for stories up to 1,000 words. Details here.  

The Sun
“We’re interested in black-and-white photographs—from intimate moments of human connection to striking natural wonders—reminding us to take a closer look at the world around us.
When we accept a photograph, we keep the image on file until we find a place for it in the magazine. It can sometimes take quite a while for us to find the right issue for an accepted photograph, but we review every image in our file when putting together each monthly issue.” They accept cover photos (pays $500), interior photos (pays $200 each), and photos for A Thousand Words section (pays $200 each).
