5 Paying Literary Markets to Submit to in July 2019

These literary markets are open during July 2019 – and not all of them are open throughout the month. They are a mix of literary and genre markets, and all of these pay writers.

PodCastle
­­­­­They publish fantasy short fiction on their website and as a podcast. They are open to all the sub-genres of fantasy, from magical realism to urban fantasy to slipstream to high fantasy. Fantastical or non-real content should be meaningful to the story. They also accept reprints.

Frozen Wavelets
This is a new speculative flash fiction and poetry e-zine. See guidelines for editor preferences and topics that are hard sells. Their first reading period is in July 2019. They also accept very short work (Twitterfiction, Drabbles), and reprints.

Length: Up to 750 words for fiction (500-1,500 for reprints), up to 10 lines for poetry

Virginia Quarterly Review
This premier literary magazine is open for submissions during July. They publish award-winning as well as emerging writers. They publish poetry, literary fiction, and nonfiction. They publish poetry of all types and lengths. They publish few author interviews or memoirs and prefer nonfiction that looks out on the world, rather than within the self. They also publish book reviews.
Deadline: 31 July 2019
Length: 2,000-8,000 words for fiction; 3,500-9,000 words for nonfiction; 2,000-2,400 words for book reviews
Pay: $200/poem, up to $1,000; $500 for book reviews; about $0.25/word for fiction and nonfiction, depending on length (higher for investigative reporting, lower for online-only)

Timeworn Literary Journal
They want submissions of historical fiction stories. These should be set before 1996, rooted in history and voice-driven. They want “Historical Fiction from the fringe”– stories with a bend toward the surreal, the dream-like, and the strange. Romance, Mystery, Crime and the Gothic are all acceptable. Speculative elements strongly encouraged. Their fist issue will be out in October.
