5 Paying Literary Markets to Submit to in January 2020

These literary markets pay writers for fiction, and some also pay for nonfiction and poetry. They are a mix of literary and genre markets, and do not charge a submission fee, or they have fee-free options. Not all of them are open throughout the month.

Cossmass Infinities
This is a science fiction and fantasy short story magazine. They also publish reprints.
Deadline: 12 January 2020
Length: 2,000-10,000 words

Ploughshares
This prestigious literary magazine accepts fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Excerpts of longer works are welcome if self-contained. They greatly prefer receiving submissions via their online system (which are charged for non-subscribers), but they also accept mailed submissions, which are free. Also see Ploughshares Solos for submitting longer works of fiction and nonfiction; and they accept queries for Look2Essays, which are about underappreciated or overlooked writers.
Deadline: 15 January 2020
Length: Up to 6,000 words for prose, up to 5 pages for poetry
Pay: $45/page, up to $450

The Stinging Fly
This Irish magazine publishes fiction and poetry from Ireland and abroad, and they have a particular interest in promoting the short story. They also publish commissioned essays, occasional author interviews and novel extracts, and have a ‘Featured Poet’ section by poets working toward their first collection (see guidelines). They welcome translations of poetry and prose.
Deadline: 16 January 2020
Length: No length guidelines for fiction; up to 3 poems
Pay: €25/page for fiction and nonfiction; €40 for single poem/magazine page; €200 for Featured Poet

Nashville Review
This literary magazine accepts fiction, nonfiction (memoir excerpts, essays, and imaginative meditations), translations, poetry, and comics. Submissions for literary comics are open year-round.  
Deadline: 31 January 2020
Length: Up to 8,000 words for prose, including novel extracts; up to 3 poems; anything from one-page comics (no single-frame cartoons) to graphic novel excerpts
Pay: $100 for prose and art, $25 for poetry

Gallery of Curiosities
This is an audio venue for speculative fiction stories. Their guidelines say, “This project is a comfortable two-headed beast at play in the curious and often dark corners of retropunk fiction. That means steampunk, dieselpunk, dreadpunk, bronzepunk, others that haven’t even been invented yet punk … but not atompunk.” Anything set after WW2 is a hard sell – take a look at the editors’ preferences and hard sells on the guidelines page. They also accept reprints.
