Proem: Now Seeking Submissions

Proem is a brand-new print journal seeking proems: hybrid writings that are both prosaic and poetic. While flash fiction is more prosaic and prose poems are more poetic, proems represent a third genre exactly in between prose and poetry. You can get a sense of what they’re looking for by reading samples from Proem online.

So far, Proem has published one issue, available in paperback on Amazon. The beautifully designed print journal, published in fall 2019, features work from around twenty contributors.

Proem accepts submissions on a rolling basis. All submissions must combine prosaic and poetic elements. They do not accept submissions written solely in poetic lineation; however, they do accept submissions that combine verse with prosaic sentences. Also, Proem is looking for submissions that expand the genre and contribute to its ongoing development. They’re not interested in proems that rely on old tricks.

Authors may submit three to five proems. Each proem should be two pages or fewer. Proem also enthusiastically accepts English translations accompanied by the work in its original language. And, they accept essays, reviews, and interviews 1,500 words or fewer.

All submissions should be accompanied by a cover letter with a four-sentence bio. Proem reads submissions blind, so attached submissions should not contain identifying information. Response time varies from three days to three months. Authors published in Proem receive one free contributor’s copy.

Proem accepts submissions online, not by post or via email. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors withdraw work published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work.
