5 Paying Literary Markets to Submit to in February 2021 – S. Kalekar

These are paying markets for fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, and they are a mix of literary and genre markets. Not all of these magazines are open through the month.

Lightspeed
This award-winning magazine is currently open to science fiction by BIPOC authors only. They will be open for general science fiction submissions during 8-14 February. They also have two short reading periods for fantasy fiction in March, one for BIPOC writers, and another one for all writers (dates are on their submission page and also on Twitter). This is a wonderful opportunity, as they have opened submissions after a long hiatus.
Deadline: 7 February 2021 for SF by BIPOC writers; reading 8-14 February for general science fiction submissions
Length: 1,500-10,000 words (under 5,000 preferred)
Pay: $0.08/word
Details here.

Shenandoah
This literary magazine publishes poems, essays, creative nonfiction, short stories, excerpts of novels in progress, comics, and translations of all of these. The February submission window is for poetry. The poetry editor is looking for “power, surprise, intelligence, big-heartedness, craftiness, mystery, and risky strangeness.” They accept comic submissions and translations throughout the year. They can only accept 800 submissions per month, so they recommend submitting early during a reading period. They are also accepting submissions for The Shenandoah Fellowship for BIPOC Editors.
Deadline: 15 February 2021 for poetry, ongoing for translations and comics (can close earlier – see above)
Length: Up to 5 poems (up to 10 pages in total)
Pay: $100 per poem, up to $500
Details here (scroll down) and here.
(Another literary magazine that is open for poetry, as well as fiction and nonfiction submissions until 15 February 2021, is The Spectacle. They pay $50 for general submissions; flash submissions for The Revue section are unpaid.)

They publish speculative fiction of every kind, except graphic horror. They also accept nonfiction essays, poems, reviews (query first), and artwork with speculative fiction themes.

Length: Up to 10,000 words for fiction and nonfiction; up to 5 poems of any length
Pay: 1.5c/word for prose and poetry; $60+ for art
