Based in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest, alice blue is an online review of poetry and prose with a hip, homegrown feel. The magazine was started in 2005 by a small group of  marble designers who took interest in literature after discovering a set of encyclopedias. In keeping with its mysterious origins, alice blue reads like a treasured collection of strange literary objects. They publish work that is both innovative and meaningfully peculiar, often with a neurotic edge. The editors cite a wide range of aesthetic influences—from Spicer to Borges, O’Connor to O’Hara—and recommend reading alice blue online to get a sense of their style.

alice blue publishes four annual editions—winter, spring, summer, and fall—each with work from ten to fifteen writers. They read submissions all year, and submitting writers can expect a response within about three months. alice blue accepts simultaneous submissions, but asks that writers let them know if their work is published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work. Writers may submit work online, but not via post or email.

Poets may submit three to five poems. Fiction and nonfiction writers may submit work of any length, but should keep in mind that shorter pieces, somewhere between 50 and 2,000 words, are most suitable for online publication. alice blue also accepts both traditional and non-traditional reviews of any literary work. Reviews may be up to three pages in length. Writers should submit only one set of work at a time in any genre.

alice blue also publishes a chapbook series, Shotgun Wedding, featuring chapbooks by six writers who are from, or living in, the Pacific Northwest. Submissions for Shotgun Wedding can be in any genre, and can be up to 25 pages in length.
