Beaver Magazine is an online journal of poetry, flash fiction and nonfiction, hybrid writing, and art. The magazine has a distinctly friendly feeling, echoed in their guidelines: “We love works of any kind. You won’t find a strict, gatekeeping submission guideline in these waters. Writing and reading is for peace, not stress.” Although they accept writing on a broad range of topics, they especially love, “work on how we shape the land and how the land shapes us.” You can get a sense of what they publish by reading the journal online.
Beaver Magazine was established in 2021, and they publish three issues each year. So far, they’ve published nine issues. The number of contributors varies from around 25 to 40 in each edition.
They hold three submission periods each year: from July 15 through September 30 for publication in their winter issue (released on November 30), from November 15 through February 15 for publication in their spring issue (released on March 20), and from April 30 through July 30 for publication in their fall issue (released on August 30). Submitting authors can expect a response within two months. Authors should send only one submission in each genre at a time.
Poets may submit three to five poems. They accept all forms of poetry—” We want the lyric, the narrative, and everything in between”—but they especially love poetry that experiments with traditional forms.
Authors of prose may submit up to three flashes, 1,000 words or fewer each. For creative nonfiction, they accept personal and lyric essays, memoire, and research-based writing. For fiction, they accept all genres and styles.
Beaver Magazine also accepts hybrid writing. Authors of hybrid work may submit up to five pieces of any length and any kind. They accept video poetry, audio art, and anything else that defies genre guidelines.
Beaver Magazine accepts submissions online using Submittable, not via email or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors withdraw writing published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work.
