This monthly column is published on the fourth Thursday of every month, and is a space to share information that doesn’t fit anywhere else in our publication. This includes a wide range of opportunities for writers, news and information, and subscribers’ recent success stories.

Catalogue Zine is open to submissions till November 30th for their themed issue “People, Places, Things.” You can learn more about the theme here.
Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway is offering attendance-based scholarships for writers on January 15th-18th, 2027. The conference is located in Seaview Hotel near Atlantic City, NJ. Scholarships completely cover workshop tuition and a Double Room Package, so recipients can attend the conference at no cost. They offer two general scholarships as well as one focused on Writers of Color. The deadline to apply for a scholarship is October 1, 2026 at 11:59pm EDT.
Flash Phantoms has a Halloween Theme for the month of October and are asking for the best Halloween-themed stories (up to 1,000 words in length). The winner will receive $20 and have their story featured alongside an author interview. The deadline is September 29th.
The Freak! is a new journal seeking short fiction “that doesn’t fit neatly into boxes”. They publish a wide range of genre and genre defying work. They say “We don’t care about genre purity. We care about voice, creative vision and the willingness to go somewhere unexpected. We want to be SHOCKED!” They are based in Toronto.
Game Over Books is open to submissions for full length manuscripts from October 1st-5th. Learn more about what they are looking for in terms of their submission guidelines here.
Owl Kids is open to submissions from Canadian authors and illustrators only, through September 30th. Their submission guidelines are here.
Modern Artist Press is currently seeking “Manuscript submissions for literary horror novels and ghost stories. Feminist retellings and spooky twists on traditional folktales are encouraged, while murder mysteries are not. Possible comps include A Sunny Place for Shady People by Mariana Enriquez, Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova, Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder, Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward, Where the Wild Ladies Are by Aoko Matsuda, and Woodworm by Layla Martinez.”
The PERCH is a creative arts journal with mental health themes focused on original voices. They reading for their next issue which they are calling The Mix. This is what they have to say about the theme “THE MIX, refers to the double-sided nature of mental illness and mental health. Put together, it creates a complex, tangled and beautiful mixture of emotions, attitudes and experiences. To be more specific: there is no doubt that mental illness is painful, sometimes excruciatingly so, and at times cruelly limits its sufferers from attaining their hopes and dreams. At the same time, many psychiatric survivors have spoken about the newfound depth and awareness that their journeys have brought them, and their appreciation of every moment, and the new stories that they have experienced and learned to tell. Without romanticizing the burdens of illness, this issue of THE PERCH will attempt to get at the puzzle of it all: the highs and low, the joys and sorrows, and the brilliant things that can derive from the experience. ” You can learn more about this submission call here.
