Shadow Falls Review is a new print journal of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, produced and published by the graduate students at The University of St. Thomas. Named after a waterfall along the Mississippi River, Shadow Falls Review hopes to emulate the sense of quiet mystery found there: “We all have shadows, lived in and cast. Where water and light meet, mingle, and disappear. That’s where you’ll find us.”
Shadow Falls Review is seeking submissions for their first annual issue, now through January 20, 2027. They welcome submissions from new, emerging, and established authors, and submitting authors can expect a response by April 1.
Poets may submit three to five poems of any length. Authors of fiction may submit one story, 5,000 words or fewer, or up to three flashes, 750 words or fewer each. Although they appreciate works that experiment with genre, they are unlikely to accept sci-fi, mystery, horror, romance, and other traditional genre writing. Authors of creative nonfiction may submit one piece, 5,000 words or fewer. They accept a wide variety of nonfiction including personal essays, literary essays, flashes, and hybrid writing. In general, Shadow Falls is looking for writing that evokes emotion and leaves a lasting impression.
Authors may submit in multiple genres, but should only send one submission per genre per reading period. Authors published in Shadow Falls will receive two contributor copies.
Shadow Falls accepts submissions online using Subfolio, not via email or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors withdraw writing published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work.

Bio: Ella Peary is the pen name of an internationally published author and editor. After earning a Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry from Sarah Lawrence College, she lived as a monastic for five years. She now lives as a lay monastic, and teaches poetry, flash fiction, and literary publishing at the Authors Publish Writers Workshop. Her writing has been published in Room, The Apple Valley Review, Fourteen Hills, and elsewhere. And a number of full-length manuscripts she’s edited have received major international awards, including The Best Graphic Novel of the Year (Comics Finlandia), The Montaigne Medal, and The National Indie Excellence Awards. She’s also a long-time literary journal reviewer and editor at Authors Publish Magazine.
