Archetype: Now Seeking Submissions

Archetype is a selective online journal of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, helmed in Toronto, Canada. They’re looking for writing that explores the human experience with honesty and insight. They want to showcase both emerging and established authors who, “celebrate life, explore human connection, and investigate the idea of being alive.” You can read Archetype online to get a sense of what they publish.

Archetype launched its first issue earlier this year, in the spring. The attractively designed downloadable journal contains work from a dozen contributors.

Archetype aims to publish two editions a year, in the spring and fall. Correspondingly, they plan to hold two reading periods each year: from November 1 through January 7 for their spring issue, and from June 1 through August 6 for their fall issue.

Authors of prose may submit essays, works of fiction, interviews, and reviews, 1,000 to 5,000 words. They do accept shorter and longer pieces of exceptional quality. Authors of prose may submit more than one piece. Poets may submit up to five poems. Submitting authors can expect a response within two weeks.

Archetype accepts submissions via email, not online or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors withdraw work published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work.

Archetype only accepts submissions that follow the guidelines they’ve posted online. Please read these guidelines in full before submitting.
