Blue Mesa Review: Now Seeking Submissions


Blue Mesa Review is an established publisher of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Helmed at the University of New Mexico, Blue Mesa Review has been published since 1989.

Each issue is edited by a fresh team of students in the university’s creative writing department, so the journal’s aesthetic is always evolving. They publish a wide variety of writing by both emerging and established authors. In general, they are looking for powerful writing with a strong sense of craft.

Submitting authors can get a sense of the journal by reading past issues online. Additionally, authors of fiction can read the blog article “What I’m Looking For: Tall, Dark, and… Previously Unpublished,” written by Jennifer Tubbs, the current fiction editor, here.

Selected works will receive a $25 contributor payment. International submissions are accepted, but they cannot process contributor payments outside the United States.

Blue Mesa Review is published twice a year online and once a year in print. All submissions will be considered for both print and online publication.

Blue Mesa Review is accepting submissions now through February 28th, 2021. Submitting authors can expect a response within six months.

Poets may submit up to three poems. Author of fiction and creative nonfiction may submit one piece, 6,000 words or fewer.

Blue Mesa Review accepts submissions using an online submission manager. They do not accept submissions via email or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors withdraw work published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work.
