Like a train barreling out of a mountain, the poetry in Boxcar Review is both surprising and uncompromising—a vehicle of irresistible force that transports readers beyond the ordinary. With reprints regularly appearing in the Best of the Net Anthology, Boxcar promises to publish the choicest poems they can find. Lyric, narrative, and everything in-between, the poems in Boxcar are as varied as the poets. Both emerging and established writers are showcased, and, in addition to poetry, Boxcar publishes reviews of first books and interviews with first book authors in order to promote new poets. Once a year, they also publish a print anthology featuring selected poems from their online magazine.
Boxcar Poetry Review is published online four times a year, and each issue contains work from around fifteen poets. They accept submissions on a rolling basis, so submitting poets should wait for a response before submitting again. Boxcar offers a “Peer Award” of $25 for the best poem of each issue.
Poets may submit three to five poems. Authors may also submit reviews, preferably about first books, 500 to 1500 words. Reviews may be personal or academic and should demonstrate close reading. Poets who have recently published a first book may query Boxcar to request a review. Boxcar also accepts interviews with first book poets. Interested authors may query to suggest a potential interviewee or to conduct an interview.
Boxcar accepts submissions online, but not via post or email. They accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that writers withdraw work published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work.
