Excession Press: Seeking Manuscript Submissions Until April 5th, 2020

Excession Press is a small press focused on horror, science fiction, weird western, or dark fantasy with literary merit. The books they publish are between 30,000 and 60,000 words in length. They say they have a few hundred words worth of wiggle room on either end of that guideline, but that is it.

Excession Press has been around for over two years, but they have only been actively publishing in 2019. Normally I wouldn’t review a publisher that is this new, but the two books they have published have excellent covers, and they’ve sold well. On Amazon and Goodreads they have a large number of reviews, and a fair amount of press.

Also, Excession Press is offering a $300 advance on royalties, with 40% royalties on net revenue from print sales and 30% royalties on net revenue from digital sales, after that advance has been met. They are open to submissions till April 5th.

On their website, they list the authors that they particularly like. The list includes Iain Banks, Katherine Dunn, Stephen Graham Jones, China Miéville, William Gibson, Jeremy Robert Johnson, Flannery O’Connor, Mieko Kanai, Chuck Palahniuk, Octavia Butler, Joe Hill, Brian Evenson, K. J. Bishop, and Philip K. Dick.

Authors are also given the ability to purchase their titles at wholesale rates. Their contract seems direct and straightforward, which always helps.

Their website is hard to navigate and a little disorganized, but they do not appear to have a distributor.

They allow simultaneous submissions but ask that you notify them if your work is accepted elsewhere. They are not interested in series of books or YA.

This small press’s motto is “Publishing the Positive”. They were founded in 2016 by Deb Haggerty, whom you can learn more about here. Elk Lake focuses on publishing positive Christian books.
