Judy Magazine is a new online publisher of fiction, nonfiction, prose poetry, and visual art. The journal is named after the editor’s grandmother, Judy, and draws its editorial mission from her “quiet and humble grit”: “We will aim to be smart, but never condescending, good, but never elitist, dogged, but never mean, and cool without being cold or effortful.”
While Judy Magazine aims to publish a wide variety of work, they especially like writing that evokes a sense of nostalgia. They love writing about childhood, the past, and about loss. They also publish old recipes, “taken from yellowed cards that you found stashed in the back of the pantry, stained by time—recipes that smell like home and make you burn for the days when everything was still possible.”
Right now, Judy Magazine is seeking submissions for their first issue. They accept any and all types of prose—including fiction, nonfiction, and prose poetry—up to 5,000 words. Subsequent issues will be themed, but no theme is listed for this first issue.
Judy Magazine also accepts family recipes. They especially like recipes that produce a sense of nostalgia, come with a story, and show something meaningful about the author and their family or culture. They also publish old family photographs and other visual art.
Judy Magazine accepts most submissions via email (and they plan to accept submissions using Submittable soon). Writers who are unable to send work online can submit by post.
Judy Magazine only accepts submissions that follow the guidelines they’ve posted online. Please read these guidelines in full before submitting.
