Laurence King: Now Accepting Proposals

Written by Emily Harstone

Important: Read This Before Submitting Your Manuscript

Seven common manuscript submissions mistakes that are very easy to avoid.

Founded in 1991 in London, Laurence King focuses on publishing books and gifts on the creative arts. They have international distribution and recognition.

They are open to proposals for books or gift products for adults, students and children. They focus particularly on the following areas: art and design, architecture, fashion and beauty, film, photography, practical art including painting and drawing, music and popular culture, nature and popular science.

They look at all proposals that are submitted to them, but they only follow through if they are interested. So do not query them if you do not receive a response.

I’ve shared their general proposal suggestions below.

“It’s helpful if you can begin with a one-sentence summary of your idea, then follow this with:

  • A one-page overview of what will be contained in your book/gift product, including an outline of the proposed structure. (Will it be divided into chapters/sections? How much text/how many images will it contain? If it’s a gift, what elements is it made up of?)
  • What you consider to be the outstanding features of the book/gift. What makes it unique?
  • Who is the market for the book/gift? Who do you see as your readership/purchaser?
  • A summary of competing works: what other books/gifts are there already on the market that are similar to your idea? Please give details of publisher, publication date and price. What makes your idea different to/better than these?
  • A brief biography/short paragraph about you. If there will be other contributors, please include a list of names.
  • Sample visuals if appropriate.”

Details for proposals for their student line are available here. There are a few additional details about what they are seeking in terms of children’s books here.
