An established online literary journal and small press, Lines + Stars was launched in 2006 as a creative outlet for Washington DC. Now housed in both DC and Baltimore, Maryland, Lines + Stars has expanded to include work from national and international authors. They publish poetry and short fiction of all varieties by both emerging and established authors. To get a sense of their style, you can read past issues online.
Lines + Stars magazine is published twice a year online. Lines + Stars Press also publishes poetry chapbooks, “best of” anthologies, and broadsides. And, they host the Big Light Reading Series in Baltimore.
Now through December 1st, Lines + Stars is seeking submissions for their Winter 2019 edition. The theme is “anniversaries.” Poets may submit three to six poems. Authors of fiction may submit short stories, 3,000 words or fewer.
Lines + Stars also accepts short book reviews of new poetry collections, 800 to 1,000 words. They are especially interested in reviews of poetry collections published by small presses. They ask authors to query before submitting book reviews.
Authors living in or around Baltimore may submit to the Big Light Reading Series. Each seasonal gathering in Baltimore features four local authors. Poets may submit three to four poems, and authors of fiction may submit an excerpt, 800 to 1,000 words.
Lines + Stars accepts submissions online, not via email or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors withdraw work published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work.
