New Critique: Now Seeking Submissions

New Critique is an online journal of both creative and critical writing. They publish poetry, fiction, and drama, alongside reviews and essays on topics in literature, art, history, politics, theory, music, film, and television.

New Critique’s online archive dates back to 2015, and their list of past contributors includes over 160 names. The journal is divided into eight categories—Literature, Art, Theory, History, Politics, Film & TV, Music, and Poetry & Fiction—and both creative and critical writing appears in each section. You can get a sense of what they publish by reading the journal online.

Each submission to New Critique is reviewed by three editors. Authors of fiction, such as short stories and flashes, may submit up to 5,000 words. New Critique also accepts dramas and short film scripts up to 5,000 words. Poets may submit up to 100 lines of poetry.

New Critique also publishes essays. Essays can be critical, creative, experimental, or journalistic, and should not exceed 3,000 words.

Authors of reviews may also submit. New Critique accepts critical reviews of books, performances, exhibitions, albums, and films, which “situate the work in its social, political, cultural, and/or intellectual contexts.”

Submitting authors can expect a response within six to eight weeks.

New Critique accepts submissions via email, not online or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors withdraw writing published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work.

New Critique only accepts submissions that follow the guidelines they’ve posted online. Please read these guidelines in full before submitting.
