Nixes Mate Review: Now Seeking Submissions

UPDATE: On May 27th their Submittable closed to new submissions. We assume this is because they hit their Submittable cap on free submissions per month, because the website still states that they are open for submissions through the 15th of June. Please check back on the 1st of June, after Submittable re-sets for the month.

Nixes Mate Review is an established online publisher of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. They aim to create an artisanal, small-batch quality journal online, with a thoughtfully designed website and a carefully curated selection of writing. You can learn more about their aesthetic by reading the journal online, and by reading the editor’s preferences outlined in the submission guidelines.

Nixes Mate has been published quarterly since 2016. They also function as a small press, publishing a limited number of full-length books, as well as chapbooks. They also host a poetry podcast.

Right now through June 15, Nixes Mate is seeking submissions for their upcoming issue. Poets may submit up to five poems in a single document. Authors of fiction may submit one short story, 2,000 words or fewer, or up to two micro stories, 500 words or fewer each, in a single document. Authors of creative nonfiction may submit one essay, 3,000 words or fewer.

Nixes Mate only accepts one submission per category from each author. They don’t accept sci-fi, fantasy, horror, mysteries, westerns, or erotica. Submitting authors can expect a response within one to two months.

Nixes Mate Review accepts submissions online using Submittable, not via email or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors withdraw work published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work. Nixes Mate reads submissions blind, so they ask that authors remove identifying information from submitted writing.

Nixes Mate Review only accepts submissions that adhere to the guidelines they’ve posted online. Please read these guidelines in full before submitting.

If you would like to learn more or submit to Nixes Mate Review, please visit their website here.

This small press’s motto is “Publishing the Positive”. They were founded in 2016 by Deb Haggerty, whom you can learn more about here. Elk Lake focuses on publishing positive Christian books.
