Notes from the Editor’s Desk: March 2025

Tin House is Getting Acquired; US libraries Lose Federal Support; Unauthorized Use of Books for Meta AI training; 3 Calls for Submissions.

This monthly column is published on the fourth Thursday of every month, and is an opportunity for me to share information that doesn’t fit anywhere else in our publication. This includes a wide range of opportunities for writers, publishing news, helpful articles we have read recently, and subscriber’s recent success stories.

Opportunities:

Haymaker Journal, which was reviewed by Ella Peary last year, is now open for their second issue. They close to submissions on March 31st.

The Woolf is open to submissions on the theme of Bully, and close to submissions on April 9th.

The Brussels Review recently reopened to submissions across most genres.

News:

Zando will acquire Tin House‘s book publishing operations. This includes the frontlist, backlist, and trademark, but does not include the Tin House Workshops and Podcast, which will continue on under the same name, but independent and separate from Zando (confusing, I know!). It seems like some of the primary staff at Tin House will simply transfer over to Zando. To learn more, go here. I do not know yet how this will impact Tin House’s open reading period.

In the US, a recent Executive Order was passed that eliminated the agency that supports libraries. You can read more about it here. The American Library Association has released a response here.

Authors Guild has published a new article on Meta’s unauthorized use of books for AI training that is very much worth reading.

While working on press research, I encountered a press, behaving in a surprising and unexpected ways. Note that I am not reviewing the press, or linking to their main page directly and sharing this out of interest only. I have taken screenshots for my own records. It’s very normal to encounter free downloadable catalogs on small press websites, but when I clicked on the catalogue link on On Rowan Prose Publishing’s site, I encountered a page selling it for 6.99 USD as a downloadable PDF, and 10.99 as a print magazine. Note, this was just for the catalogue of books they’ve published. I found the press listed on Duotrope.

On a more personal note, On March 13th, the podcast Listen & Be Heard, featured an interview with me as part of their third season. You can listen to it here.
