Pithead Chapel: Now Seeking Submissions

An established monthly online journal, Pithead Chapel publishes writing to remember. They like meaningful, honest literature that leaves a taste readers crave. They publish daring fiction, nonfiction, and prose poetry in a wide variety of forms and styles from both emerging and established authors. The best way to get a sense of what they like is by reading the journal online.

Helmed in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Pithead Chapel has published a new digital edition each month since 2012. They also publish a couple printed chapbooks each year.

Pithead Chapel is open to submissions year-round; however, they occasionally close to submissions for a brief time when they are preparing for publication. Authors can check their website to find out if submissions are open. They respond to all submissions within six months.

Authors of prose poetry may submit up to three prose poems. Pithead Chapel does not accept formal poetry (sonnets, sestinas, limericks, and the like). Authors of fiction may submit one short story or piece of flash fiction, 4,000 words or fewer. Pithead Chapel does not accept genre fiction. Authors of creative nonfiction may submit one personal essay, memoir, lyrical essay, flash essay, or experimental piece, 4,000 words or fewer. Pithead Chapel does not accept critical essays. Authors in all genres should wait for a response before submitting again.

Pithead Chapel accepts submissions online, not via email or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors immediately withdraw work published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work.

If you would like to learn more or submit to Pithead Chapel, please visit their website here.
