Scrutiny: Open to Submissions

Scrutiny is a new electronic literary journal that publishes fiction. All the fiction that they publish could be categorized as magic realism. They ask that you don’t submit fantasy.

Magic realism is often defined by the matter-of-fact inclusion of fantastic or mythical elements

They have yet to publish their first issue. However, their site is well designed, and they have quick response times. Their goal is to respond within 6 weeks, but most individuals report responses within a few days.

Please only submit one short story at a time. The length can be anything between 500 and 7,000 words. Generally they prefer work that is under 3,000 words, although their are exceptions.

They have an easy to use submission form. They allow simultaneous submissions but ask that you indicate that fact on the submission form.

They ask that you grant them first North American serial rights. This means that you are granting them the right to be the first publisher of your work one time in North America. That does seem to indicate that they would be open to publishing work that had been previously published outside of North America before hand.

It also means that after they publish it the rights revert to you, with no noted time delay.
