Sinking City: Accepting Submissions

Sinking City is an online literary journal published twice a year. It is run by MFA students and undergraduate interns at the University of Miami.

To get a good feel for what they publish you can read their most recent issue here. Their most recent issue included a formal poem (a golden shovel), alongside freeverse, short fiction, and flash. They only published five authors overall, although most poets had multiple poems published in the issue. The issue before that featured ten authors, as well as a number of visual artists, so the numbers do vary.

They are currently accepting submissions and seeking fiction, poetry, nonfiction essays, and visual art for their next issue. The theme of this issue is Re-Imaginings. This is what they have to say about the theme: “Sinking City invites you to reimagine the past, the present, and the future. It’s a chance to rewrite history, myths, dreams, and serendipitous connections that perhaps dissolved prematurely. What if we reimagined history so our lands and people were never colonised? What if we reimagined a world where queerness was cherished and celebrated by everyone? What if we reimagined a dream, a memory, or even conversations and conflicts that rest at the edge of our subconscious minds?

We want prose, poems, and visual art that explore the many “what-ifs.” The paths we didn’t take and the choices we still wonder about. Send us the most wonderful and profound reimaginings that only you can create!” For nonfiction they say the same thing.

They allow simultaneous submissions and try to respond to all submissions within six months. They ask that past contributors wait three years after their work was published to submit new work.

The deadline to submit is November 20th, 2026. All submissions must be made through Submittable.
