Stairway Press publishes and markets literary books in a variety of genres including science, science fiction, short stories, political essays, literary thrillers and adventure books. They are not interested in young adult or children books. Their main focus is quality writing. Although a number of the books I looked at I would not describe as literary, even in the context of genre. You can get a better feel for what they publish by browsing their catalog here.
They are a traditional publisher and they do have a marketing and design division. They are not focused on recruiting authors which is always a good sign, although I don’t find their website particularly appealing and I wish they disclosed more detailed information about their editors, distributors, and the real experience of their marketing team. In general I would prefer for there to be more details on the website. As it is, it is hard to get a feel for how big or established they are. I have not personally seen any of their books in bookstores. I also think that their cover designs are generally lacking.
It is important to note that they have published a number of non-fiction books denying climate change, and supporting other conservative issues.
They have published a number of books by authors that are on the more established end of things, so that is a good sign. You have to query first. All queries are made through email. To learn more, go here.
