Sugared Water is a print magazine produced in Cincinnati, Ohio, publishing poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Born out of a love for words fueled by the caffeinated nights of graduate school, Sugared Water is a literary magazine created by writers, for writers. Like the back corner of the library at midnight, Sugared Water is meant to be a hideaway for the kind of sleep-stealing work writers hold dear. They publish anything they love: surprising poetry, form-blending fiction and unusual genre work, and all forms of non-fiction from lyric essays to lists. As a reflection of their love for the work inside, Sugared Water wraps each issue in a limited-edition screen printed cover.
Sugared Water has two reading periods in 2016: April 1 – May 1 and October 1 – November 1.
Poets may submit three to five poems. Fiction writers may submit one short story, up to 4,500 words, or one piece of flash fiction up to 1,000 words. Pieces around 2,500 words are more likely to be published. Non-fiction writers may submit one essay or work of narrative non-fiction up to 4,500 words, though they prefer shorter works around 500 to 3,000 words. All submissions should be accompanied by a cover letter, including a brief bio up to 50 words. Submitting writers in all genres should submit only once per submission period, and can expect a response within about two weeks.
Sugared Water accepts submissions online, but not via post or email. They accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that writers withdraw work accepted elsewhere. They don’t accept previously published work.
