The Broken City: Now Seeking Submissions

The Broken City is an established online publisher of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art. Helmed in Toronto, The Broken City has been published twice a year since 2007.

Each themed issue of The Broken City contains writing from around 15 contributors. Past themes have included “Beach Party Tonight,” “The Social Animal,” and “The Wild West.” They publish a wide range of writing styles, and you can get a sense of what they like by reading the journal online.

Now through June 1st, The Broken City is seeking submissions for their summer 2024 edition, themed DIY: “we want to hear about crafts, construction, repairs, destruction, recipes, art and inventions (time machines included, working or not).”

The Broken City will consider almost any type of writing or artwork, but they most commonly publish poetry, fiction, essays, comics, illustrations, photography, and music or book reviews. Authors of fiction and nonfiction may submit up to 3,000 words. Poets may submit up to five poems.

The Broken City accepts both unpublished and previously published writing. Authors will be notified of acceptances and rejections after the submission window closes on June 1st.

The Broken City accepts submissions via email, not online or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors notify the editors when submitted writing is published elsewhere.

The Broken City only accepts submissions that follow the guidelines they’ve posted online. Please read these guidelines in full before submitting.
