The Innovation Press is a small children’s book publisher with major distribution through Baker and Taylor. My children own a number of their books, and I regularly encounter books they have published at the library and bookstores. Some of their best known books are the Zoey and Sassafras series, and the picture book, My Name is a Song. They are a member of the Children’s Book Council, the American Booksellers Association, and the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association.
They do not publish very many books every year, and so far in 2025 have only released one book. The same was true in 2024. In 2023 and before they released more books per year, but still not very many.
At the top of their submission page they have a starred note that says “If you have mimicked the style, structure, rhyme, or plot of a book that is already in existence, we are not interested in your submission. We only wish to receive ORIGINAL work, not work that has been heavily inspired.”
The books they publish are focused on readers starting in Pre-K through the 5th grade. This includes MG novels, as well as graphic novels and nonfiction. They stress that “We are particularly interested in hybrid texts that blend fiction elements with nonfiction elements, though we also welcome traditional fiction and nonfiction submissions. We love books that make us laugh and we get excited when we see a presentation/approach or subject we have not seen before. We are also actively seeking #OwnVoices submissions.”
They ask that authors submitting fiction and nonfiction submit a synopsis of their book, the first 10 pages, and a brief biography. They have different guidelines for illustrator submissions as well as proposals of activity books. To see all the details for all the guidelines as well as their contact information, please go here.
If you have not heard from them after four weeks, they ask that you assume your work has been rejected.
