The Marrow is an online poetry journal helmed in Australia. They publish a broad range of forms and styles, from free verse to formal poetry, written by both emerging and established authors from around the world. Overall, they’re looking for innovative, skillfully crafted poetry that’s accessible to a broad audience. You can get a sense of what they like by reading the journal online.
The Marrow is published three times a year. Each thoughtfully designed online edition features around 25 poems. So far, they’ve published four issues.
The Marrow is open for submissions three times a year: in March for publication in their June issue, in July for publication in their October issue, and in November for publication in their February issue. They sometimes close early if they reach their maximum number of submissions.
Poets may submit up to three poems, totaling four pages or fewer. The Marrow also accepts English translations, with permission from the original author. They do not accept prose of any kind, including flash writing.
Submitting authors can expect a response within eight weeks. Authors published in The Marrow will receive AU$40 per acceptance.
Authors should not submit to two consecutive issues of The Marrow, regardless of whether the submission is accepted. Authors published in The Marrow should wait one year before submitting again.
The Marrow accepts submissions using an online form, not via email or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors withdraw writing published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published writing, including writing published on personal websites, blogs, or social media. They do, however, accept poems that are scheduled for publication in forthcoming collections.
The Marrow only accepts submissions that follow the guidelines they’ve posted online. Please read these guidelines in full before submitting. The Marrow does not accept submissions written by AI.
The Marrow sometimes holds online poetry workshops for young poets, ages 11-16. These are paid events, and you find out more about them here.
