The Monarch Review: Accepting Submissions

The Monarch Review is an online and print journal founded on the culture of Seattle’s Monarch Apartments, a home for artists and thinkers of all kinds. Like the Monarch Apartments, the review aims to support a culture of creative exploration by making a meeting ground for emerging and established writers. They publish poetry, fiction, non-fiction, music, and visual art, and they especially like pieces that compel the reader’s attention with novelty and persistence. They like work that grapples with universal conflicts inherent in humanity, work that sings a song we all know. You can get a sense of what they publish by reading past issues online.

The Monarch Review is published weekly online, with work from about seven authors, visual artists, and musicians, and biannually in print. All submissions are considered for both online and print publication. They read submissions year-round, and submitting authors can expect a response within three months.

Poets may submit three to six poems. Fiction writers may submit one short story up to 4,000 words, or one piece of flash fiction up to 1,000 words. Non-fiction writers may submit one piece of non-fiction, such as a personal essay, memoire, or work of literary criticism, up to 4,000 words. The Monarch Review is especially interested shorter works of non-fiction, 500 to 1,500 words, dealing with the cultural impact of modern technological developments. Writers in all genres should send only one submission at a time.

The Monarch Review accepts submissions online, but not via post or email. They welcome simultaneous submissions, but ask that authors withdraw work that’s accepted elsewhere. They don’t accept previously published work.
