The Sandy River Review—and its online counterpart, The River—are published by the University of Maine Farmington. The print publication, The Sandy River Review, is overseen by Alice James Books, a poetry press, and the online publication, The River, is overseen by Shana Youngdhal. This established journal has been published for 37 years. You can get sense of their style by reading past issues online, but keep in mind that the editorial staff changes throughout the year and the journal publishes a wide variety of forms and aesthetics.
The River accepts submissions for online publication year-round. The Sandy River Review accepts submissions for their annual publication during a yearly reading period. They are now open for submissions.
Poets may submit up to five poems, totaling three pages or fewer. Authors of fiction and creative nonfiction may submit up to three pieces, totaling 3,500 words or fewer. There is no minimum length requirement; they accept flash writing and micro poetry.
They accept literary and genre fiction, as well as all forms and styles of poetry and creative nonfiction. They do not accept translations, reviews, or interviews.
Playwrights may submit work—short plays, excerpts, scenes, monologues, short screen plays, etc.—3,500 words or fewer. The Sandy River Review also accepts photography and visual art, as well as podcasts and audio essays for online publication.
Submissions for print and online publication are separate. Authors whose work is not accepted for publication in the print edition of The Sandy River Review may be asked to submit their work for online publication in The River.
The Sandy River Review accepts submissions online and via email, but not by post. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors withdraw work published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work.
