Two Serious Ladies: Now Accepting Submissions

Two Serious Ladies is an online magazine of writing and visual art by women based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Founded in February 2012, this young magazine, curated by a solo editor, is already a tastemaker. They have been lauded by a devoted following for publishing brave, transformative work. Decidedly avant-garde, Two Serious Ladies is quickly becoming a barometer of contemporary, feminist writing and visual art.

Though unquestionably edgy, innovation is not the focus of Two Serious Ladies. Their primary aim is to increase the visibility of female writers and visual artists by publishing work on a non-stop, rolling basis, in a free and accessible online format. This constant display of new work by women is intended as a response to the perceived misogyny of the publishing community.

Two Serious Ladies publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art. They also publish cross-medium work, such as author-illustrated writing, writing with video, audio slideshows, and comics. There are no guidelines for submissions, allowing them to publish work of any length. Writers and visual artists may submit work online year-round, along with a brief cover letter. They do not accept submissions by post or email, and they do not accept simultaneous submissions or previously published work.

How to Get Started With Writing Essays

By Ratika Deshpande The essay is a form that can take diverse appearances: travelogues, memoirs, lists, drabbles. As exciting as its variety feels, I’ve also found it frustrating that there are hardly any guides detailing how to work with the form. The following is a sort of beginner’s guide I wish I’d had when I…
