10 Calls for Poetry Submissions

This is a list of ten places poets and translators can submit to. There are a couple of themed submission calls, and a poetry competition for young poets in the UK. Some magazines pay for work. While all of these calls are for poetry, all have widely different tones and styles.

Art UK: Art Speaks Competition

This is for 13-24-year-old poets based in the UK. Poets should upload a film of themselves on YouTube, reciting an original poem they have created in response to an artwork of their choice on Art UK.
Deadline: 28 August 2017
Word count: Films should be no longer than two minutes
Pay: £500, and development and professional filming of a new poem to be released on Art UK

Liminality: A Magazine of Speculative Poetry

They are looking for speculative poems that touch the heart as well as the head; that are luminal, fluid and fantastic.
Deadline: 31 August 2017
Word count: Up to three poems per submission; up to five per reading period

The North

This is a UK-based poetry journal of contemporary poetry. They like energy, technique and imagination. Hard copy submissions only.

Modern Poetry in Translation: Russia and Ukraine

They are looking for translations of poetry from Russia and Ukraine for their next issue. They have a preference for contemporary work.

McSweeny’s Quarterly: Immigrant & Refugee Open Call

They are looking for work by refugee writers living in the US and abroad. The work must explore themes relevant to immigrant and refugee communities, including immigration, exile, refuge, displacement, resettlement and belonging.

Word count: Three poems of up to 40 lines; up to 7,000 words for fiction and 5,000 for non-fiction

Thrush

They want poems with a strong sense of imagery, emotion, with a surprising and interesting use of language. They do not send form letters accepting or declining work and will comment whenever possible. They also nominate work for awards, including Pushcart and Best of the Net. They respond within 10 days.

This Georgia-based journal is the second-oldest poetry journal in the region. They accept poetry from all over the US, and the world.

This well-regarded poetry journal publishes poetry, including translated poetry, and poetry-related prose, including book reviews.

They publish poetry and translations of poems. They publish both free verse and traditional forms.
