5 Paying Literary Magazines to Submit to in April 2022

These magazines pay for fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and other genres, and include are both literary and genre markets. Please note, not all of them are open throughout the month.

Narrative Magazine
They publish fiction, nonfiction, poetry, plays, audio poetry and prose, and video (short films/documentaries). They usually charge for submissions but during the first two weeks of April, they have an open reading period, for general submissions made specifically to the Open Reading category via their submissions page. (Please note, fee-free submissions are not eligible for their annual Narrative Prize.)

Poetry Wales
They’re open to poetry submissions from all writers on all themes, “but we are putting out a call especially to writers with disabilities.” Also, “We are not seeking abled writers’ takes on disability, or writing from them in the voices of people with disabilities.” They also accept pitches on poetry-related features, interviews, and reviews.
Deadline: 18 April 2022
Length: Up to 4 poems
Pay: £20/page for poems, £67.50/1,500-word review, £200/3,000 word articles, or in that proportion, depending on number of published words

(Submissions are also open for Love the Words poetry competition 2022, which is part of the International Dylan Thomas Day; they want poetry of up to 40 lines on the theme of water, the deadline is 7 May 2022, and the prize is publication.)

Mud Season Review
They publish fiction, nonfiction, and poetry – “deeply human work that will teach us something about life, but also about the craft of writing or visual art, and work that is original in its approach and that in some way moves us.” They also publish artwork. Please note, submissions may close early if volume demands.
Deadline: 30 April 2022, or until filled
Length: Up to 6,000 words for prose, 3-5 poems

(And Air/Light magazine is open for submissions, too. They publish fiction, nonfiction, poetry, cross-genre work, art, music, and multimedia. Pay is $50-200. There is no deadline listed.)

Planet Scumm
They publish sci-fi, weird fiction, speculative fiction, and slipstream. This is a print magazine, and some stories are also published online. Send a short story or a collection of flash pieces. They are reading for issue #15.

Length: Up to 5,000 words
Pay: $0.05/word

(And Solarpunk Magazine is accepting submissions by BIPOC writers only for their Colorful Roots issue; they want solarpunk fiction of 500-7500 words, pays $.08 per word, $100 minimum; poetry of up to 5 poems or 5 pages of poems, whichever is shorter, pays $40/poem; and nonfiction of 1,000-2,000 words, pays $75 per essay or article. The deadline is 14 April 2022.
Also, Wyngraf wants flash and microfiction submissions of cozy fantasy stories, of up to 1,001 words. Pay is $0.01/word.)

The Georgia Review
This literary magazine publishes fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and book reviews. They have published work that is less than half a page, and more than 60 pages. Online submissions for non-subscribers are charged, but there is no fee for mailed submissions.
