5 Paying Literary Magazines to Submit to in March 2019

These literary markets are open during March 2019. They are a mix of literary and genre markets, and not all of them are open for the entire month. All of these magazines pay writers.

Southword Literary Journal
This is a print literary journal published at least twice a year by the Muster Literature Centre. They have published the likes of Helen Ivory, Haruki Murakami, Tess Gallagher, and Colm Toibín. They are accepting work for their autumn issue currently and this is the only reading period when they accept unsolicited submissions.
Deadline: 15 March 2019
Length: Up to 6 poems; up to 2 stories of 5,000 words each
Pay: €250 per short story, €40 per poem

West Branch
This literary magazine from Bucknell University has a print as well as an online presence. This is one of the few magazines that has increased its yearly issues from two online and two print to three of each. They welcome submissions of poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, and translations. Reviews are only of poetry, and by assignment – reviewers are welcome to query.
Deadline: 31 March 2019
Length: Up to 6 poems or 30 pages of prose
Pay: $0.05/word for prose, up to $100; $50 per poem; $200 per assigned review

Verity La
This Australian magazine publishes work in a variety of streams, including, but not limited to, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, interviews, travel writing with a twist, work addressing issues of displacement and social justice, work from D/deaf and disabled artists, and reviews.

Length: Up to 5,000 words for prose

Boulevard 

­­­­­This literary magazine publishes fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. They do not accept science fiction, erotica, westerns, horror, romance, or children’s stories. Their guidelines say that they are interested in publishing less experienced or unpublished writers with exceptional promise, along with those who have a publishing history. They accept poems of up to 200 lines and they do not publish light verse. There is no fee for mailed submissions.
Deadline: 1 May 2019
Length: Up to 8,000 words for prose, up to 5 poems
Pay: $100-300 for prose, $25-250 for poetry

LampLight
This is a magazine for dark fiction: “We go for stories that are dark, literary; we are looking for the creepy, the weird and the unsettling.” They do not want stories about vampires, zombies, werewolves, serial killers, hitmen, excessive gore or sex, excessive abuse against women, revenge fantasies, cannibals, or high fantasy. They can accept only 300 submissions a month during their reading period, and their submissions usually fill up quickly.

Length: Up to 7,000 words
Pay: $0.03/word, up to $150
