Since 2010, Muzzle Magazine has been publishing creative work that creates the future, poetry “of revolution and revelation.” The only online literary magazine in 2010 to be named by Library Journal as one of the best new periodicals, Muzzle has lived up to its early accolades. Poems published in Muzzle have been selected for Best American Poetry, Verse Daily, and The Pushcart Prize. Their editors have a broad range of tastes so they don’t adhere to a particular aesthetic. Rather, they look for poetry that gives form to the ineffable, words that hint at what’s beyond words.
Muzzle is published online twice a year, in June and December. They accept poetry submissions on a rolling basis, but close to submissions from June 15 through August 15, and from December 1 through February 1. Most issues are unthemed, but they occasionally publish themed editions and when they do, they post calls for themed submissions on their website.
Poets may submit three to five poems, taking care to remove identifying information because the editors at Muzzle prefer to read submissions blind. Muzzle accepts submissions online, but not via post or by email. They accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that poets immediately withdraw work published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work.
Muzzle also publishes interviews and book reviews. Poets who have published a collection of poetry in the past two years may submit the book for consideration. If the collection is accepted, Muzzle will pass it along to one of their book reviewers.
