The Final Girl Review is a new online journal of horror: “Whether it’s gothic lament, psychological unease, or poetic dread, I seek work that breathes (or un-breathes) new life into the horror genre.”
They publish fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art, and they aim to create more spaces for, “truly chilling voices to be heard.”
The Final Girl Review was established this year, and right now they’re seeking submissions for their first issue. They accept submissions year-round.
Authors of fiction may submit one horror story, 500 to 4,000 words. They do consider longer stories, but they are less likely to be published. The Final Girl Review accepts all forms of horror, “From gothic to psychological, supernatural to body horror,” including pieces with dark fantasy and speculative elements.
Poets may submit up to three poems, 100 lines or fewer each. They accept all forms and styles of horror poetry, including surreal and speculative, and they’re especially interested in poems that explore themes like fear, obsession, and the unknown.
Authors creative nonfiction may submit “true stories with a dark slant,” 1,000 to 3,500 words. They accept both memoires and creative essays, and they like writing that explores topics such as trauma and “personal brushes with the unsettling.”
They also accept reviews, 800 to 1,500 words, of horror books, films, or other media. These can be new or old titles. They also accept academic and critical essays, 1,500 to 4,000 words, on horror literature and film, as well as horror theory and history.
Submitting authors can expect a response within four to six weeks.
The Final Girl Review accepts submissions via email, not online or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that authors withdraw writing published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work, including writing published on blogs or social media.
