Unearthed is an online literary journal of environmental writing, published by SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. They are looking for writing that, “offers insight and attention—be it long deferred or newly cultivated—to our complex relationships with our environments.”
They accept all forms of creative work—poetry, fiction, creative and critical nonfiction, photography, videos, and artwork. And though they accept submissions from all authors, they are especially interested in showcasing new voices. With that in mind, they encourage unpublished authors to submit.
Unearthed was established in 2015 and is now published twice a year online. You can read past issues in their archive, or their latest issue, themed “Nourish,” to get a sense of what they publish. Each issue contains writing from around 12 to 15 contributors.
Now through March 27, they are seeking submissions for their Spring 2026 issue, themed “Witnessing”.
Poets may submit up to five poems on this theme. Authors of fiction may submit up to 4,000 words. Authors of creative or critical nonfiction may submit 500-4,000 words. They also accept visual art and videos.
Unearthed accepts submissions via email, not online or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors withdraw writing published elsewhere.
Unearthed only accepts submissions that follow the guidelines they’ve posted online. Please read these guidelines in full before submitting.
