5 Paying Literary Magazines to Submit to in March 2026

These magazines accept fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. They’re a mix of literary and genre magazines.

Apex Magazine
This is a digital dark science fiction and fantasy magazine publishing short fiction, essays, and interviews. They also accept nonfiction pitches (not submissions). They’re open during certain months this year, including March, for short fiction.
Deadline: 31 March 2026
Length: Up to 9,000 words for short fiction
Pay: $0.08/word for fiction; additional $0.01/word if story is podcast

(– And Aurealis, an Australian speculative fiction magazine, is open for general submissions (from all writers) during March. “Aurealis is looking for science fiction, fantasy or horror short stories… All types of science fiction, fantasy and horror that are of a “speculative” nature will be considered, but we do not want stories that are derivative in nature. We do not publish horror without a supernatural element.” Please read their guidelines carefully, including about file format. They pay AUD20-60 per 1,000 words (“assume the lower rate for unsolicited submissions”); send stories of 2,000-8,000 words. The deadline is 31 March 2026 for general submissions (from all writers); Australian and NZ writers can submit till end-September; details here.

— Also, MetaStellar is open for speculative flash fiction submissions through March; they accept other genres too, like reviews and essays, though there is no payment for those. They pay $0.10/word for original stories up to 1,200 words; details here.)  

Pulp Literature
They are open for fiction submissions through March. They have detailed guidelines, including, “We are looking for entertaining, accessible stories.  We do appreciate clever and poetic turns of phrase, but first and foremost we want a story readers can sink into late at night before they go to bed. We want to stretch people’s minds, but not give them a headache. … We take all genres, not just pulp.  Because our title says “Pulp” Literature, some authors assume we want guns and blood. The pulp in our title refers to cheap pulp paper of dimestore novels and digests of the past. We want our magazine to include a balance of all genres, including fantasy, romance, mystery, literary, etc.” They’re also open to artwork queries year-round. Other genres are closed. Submission is via a form.

Pay:  $0.05 – $0.08 per word for short stories up to 5,000 words,  $0.03 – $0.06 per word between 5,000 and 10,000 words, and $0.02 – $0.04 per word for works over 10,000 words

The Ex-Puritan
This Canadian literary magazine publishes fiction, nonfiction, experimental/hybrid work, interviews, reviews, poetry, and poetry in translation. The deadline is 1 April, or when filled, for the next issue; they accept a limited number of fee-free submissions every month, and read year-round.
Deadline: 1 April 2026, or until filled
Length: Varies
Pay: CAD200 per essay; CAD150 for fiction; CAD100 per interview or review; CAD50 per poem, capped at CAD100; CAD50+ per experimental or hybrid work, at an increasing scale depending on the nature of the piece.

(– And, Profiles wants submissions of character-driven fiction and nonfiction. They do not accept submissions from writers who are US- and Canada-based with the exception of Irish citizens, though translators living in these countries are welcome to submit. They pay €400 for submissions via the open submission call, with a potential additional €100 to each contributor who records a reading of their work and/or takes part in an interview for the annual Profiles radio special, see here. Send works of 1,000-5,000 words. The deadline is 15 March 2026 for issue 5. Submission is via a form. Details here.

— Banshee is also open for submissions from Irish and international authors for issue 22 (autumn/winter 2026) – flash and short fiction, nonfiction, poetry. Send up to 5,000 words for prose, up to 40 lines for poems. They pay €300 for a story/essay; €100 for flash fiction; €75 per poem – see ‘We believe in paying writers’ here; deadline: 31 March 2026; details here; do not send work outside of the submission period. 

— And Brick Magazine, a Canadian magazine which accepts creative nonfiction, will open for submissions via Submittable on 1st April, and close for fee-free submissions when their cap is reached. They tend toward pieces of 1,000-5,000 words, and pay $65-720; details here.

— Also, The Paris Review will open for poetry submissions on 1st April 2026; their Submittable will stay open till capacity is reached, and they’ll accept postal submissions through April; details here.)

West Branch
West Branch accepts fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and translations. It is affiliated with Bucknell University.
Deadline: 1 April 2026
Length: Up to 30 pages of prose, up to 6 poems
Pay: $100 for poetry, $0.10/word up to $200 for prose

The Threepenny Review
This respected quarterly journal accepts fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and submissions for their ‘Table Talk’ column.
Deadline: 15 April 2026
Length: Up to 4,000 words for fiction and memoir, poetry up to 100 lines
Pay: $400 per story or article, $200 per poem or Table Talk piece
