South Carolina Review is a well-established print journal of poetry and fiction, housed at Clemson University. They sometimes publish creative nonfiction, scholarly essays, and book reviews too. You can read selections from the journal online to get a sense of what they publish.
South Carolina Review was formerly called Southern Literary Magazine, and was founded at Furman University in 1968. It has been housed at Clemson University since 1973. In its long history, many notable authors have been published in the journal, including Kurt Vonnegut, Joyce Carol Oates, and Elizabethe Strout. They publish two print issues each year, in the spring and fall, each featuring writing from around forty contributors.
Now through July 15, South Carolina Review is seeking submissions for their Spring 2027 issue. Poets may submit up to six poems. Authors of fiction and creative nonfiction may submit one story or essay, with no minimum or maximum word count. If the story or essay is very short, or if multiple pieces are interconnected, authors may submit more than one. Authors published in South Carolina Review receive two contributor copies of the journal.
South Carolina Review accepts submissions online using Submittable, not via email. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors withdraw writing published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work, and they do not accept multiple submissions.
South Carolina Review only accepts submissions that follow the guidelines they’ve posted online. Please read these guidelines in full before submitting.
