The Hunger: Now Seeking Submissions

The Hunger is a new online journal of visceral literature. They publish poetry, fiction, non-fiction, hybrid work, and visual art—all, they say, with the intention of gutting you. They are looking for work that’s honest, vulnerable and raw, and creates a hunger for more. And they want to invite everyone—people of all races, religions, sexual orientations, political persuasions, and so forth—to submit. They want to create an inclusive platform for a wide range of voices.

The Hunger will be published three times a year online: winter, spring, and fall. Their reading periods are: for the winter issue, September 1 through December 15; for the spring issue, January 1 through April 15; and for the fall issue, May 1 through August 15.

Poets may submit three to five poems. Fiction submissions should be 1- 4,000 words and non-fiction, 1 to 5,000 words. Authors of hybrid and experimental work may submit work of any length. All submissions should include a brief bio and cover letter. The Hunger reads all submissions blind.

They are also seeking submissions for a column that will appear in each issue called “The Glutton’s Digest.” The piece selected will “set the table” for the rest of the issue. It can be a restaurant or food review, a recipe, a dining (or not dining) experience, or any wild experiment in food writing. And the theme of “hunger” can apply to more than food. They are looking for writing that explores any of the infinite hungers and thirsts of our human experience.

The Hunger accepts submissions via email, not online or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that authors send notification if their work is published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work, including work published on blogs or social media. At this time, they aren’t able to pay authors; however, they hope to do so in the future.

27 Literary Fiction Publishers that Accept Direct Submissions – No Agent Required

Literary fiction is one of the harder genres to get published in without an agent. However, there are still good options for authors who are unagented and averse to paying reading fees. The manuscript…
