New South Publishing: Open to Queries

New South Publishing is an Australia based university press. New South is the publishing arm of UNSW Press Ltd, based out of the of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) – Sydney. It has won the Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIA) for small publisher twice – in 2016 and 2017.

New South has a hard to navigate website with several imprints, including one that publishes fiction and children’s books and does not appear open to submissions. They are however open to submissions of nonfiction work, excluding textbooks, and work based on academic outputs including PhD thesis, unless heavily re-written.

According to their website, proposals for submission should include:

  • a short synopsis or rationale (one to two pages)
  • two sample chapters
  • proposed length (number of words)
  • a detailed chapter breakdown
  • samples and details of illustrations, diagrams or tables (not originals)
  • an assessment of the intended audience
  • summary of strengths and weaknesses of competing/similar titles
  • suggestions for possible reviewers of the proposal
  • a brief author resumé including relevant experience (such as media experience and contacts) and previous publications.

Submissions can be made by post or email, but they will notify you of receipt only if you submit via email. If they do not respond within 12 weeks it means they are not interested.

You can get a feel for what they publish here. You can read their complete submission guidelines here.
