The Pig’s Back
This Ireland-based journal publishes fiction and nonfiction. They do not publish poetry.

This award-winning speculative fiction magazine is only open for short fiction during this submission period – please do not submit works of other lengths or genres.

Two other speculative fiction magazines open for a brief period in October are:
— Translunar Travelers Lounge, which wants fun speculative fiction; “A fun story, at its core, is one that works on the premise that things aren’t all bad; that ultimately, good wins out. … Swashbuckling adventure, deadly intrigue, and gleeful romance are some of the most obvious examples of what we’re looking for, but we won’t say no to more subtle or complicated topics, as long as they fit under the wider “fun” umbrella.” Pay is $0.03/word for stories up to 5,000 words, and the deadline is 15 October 2023; details here.
— Mythaxis Magazine, which will open for a week towards end- October. Pay is €0.01 per word, with a €20 minimum, for  speculative fiction of 1,000-5,000 words. The submission period is 23^rd to 30^th October; please send your work only during the reading period. Details here.
— And Neon Hemlock Press, which publishes work on queer themes, will open for speculative fiction novellas from all writers from October 15^th to 30^th. Details of that, and all their calls, are here.

MetaStellar
They have opened their flash speculative fiction submission window during October – this is a paying opportunity. “We’re looking for your best enthralling, imaginative, or bone-chilling original fiction stories, as long as they’re 1,200 words or fewer.” They also welcome unpaid submissions and pitches all year round — in the form of reviews, essays, excerpts, and reprints.

Baltimore Review

Cutleaf is also open for nonfiction submissions of 1,500-6,000 words. Pay is $100-400, and the deadline is 31 October 2023, or until filled. Details here. Poetry submissions will open in November. They also want fiction from US-based rural writers of color, the deadline for that is 31 December 2023.

The Paris Review
They are open for poetry and poetry translation submissions in October. Their Submittable will close when the cap is reached, but they will still accept mailed submissions through October.
