Helmed at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, Ascent is a literary journal of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and photography. Since 1975, they’ve curated a collection of the best work from select emerging and established writers. Previously a print publication, they transitioned to an online format in 2009. Since then, they’ve published and archived the work of hundreds of authors, all of which you can read online to get a sense of the broad range of forms and styles they showcase. You can also review the list of literary journals they favor under the tab, “Other Fine Reading,” to get a sense of their taste.
Ascent is published three times a year online. Right now, they are accepting submissions through May 31. Submitting authors can expect a response in June, and the publication will be released in July. Then, they will reopen to submissions from August 1 through September 30. Authors submitting during this period can expect a response in October, and the publication will be released in November.
Ascent does not ask authors to adhere to any guidelines concerning word count, page limit, or number of pieces per submission. They do, however, ask that authors submit their work in PDF format. They accept fiction, poetry, and nonfiction essays. About 5% of authors who submit to Ascent are published in the journal.
Ascent accepts submissions online, but not via post or by email (except for submissions of photography, which can be emailed to the address provided). They do not accept previously published work.
